ABSTRACT


Objectives

This study examined the effects of bullying victimization on defending behavior, and investigated whether perceived affective empathy and social support moderated the relationship between bullying victimization and defending behavior.

 

Methods

The participants were 210 children who were 4-6 graders from 11 elementary schools in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions using PROCESS macro program (Model 2) by Hayes (2013).

 

Results

Results indicated that bullying victimization, affective empathy, and social support had positive influences on defending behavior. Further analysis on the moderating effect of social support showed that the positive influence of bullying victimization on defending behavior was greater when social support was high. In contrast, affective empathy had no moderating effect.

 

Conclusion

Affective empathy could increase defending behavior. Also, the significant moderating effect suggests that social support is an important role in conducting defending behavior especially among children who experienced bullying.
